Parent Information 2020
December 5 & 6, 2020
Hendricks Hall- UCM Campus
We are excited to announce our 8th annual production of The Nutcracker ballet this holiday season! All students in the ballet program are encouraged to participate in this magical experience!
Each ballet class will perform one dance in the Nutcracker. Dancers in Kindergarten, Junior, Intermediate and Advanced ballet classes need not audition, as they are directly cast in suitably challenging roles by the Ballet Department Staff. Class casting will be announced in September. Dancers in Pre-Pointe (6th grade & up) & Pointe 1-4 have the opportunity to audition for Principal roles and ensembles.
Nutcracker Principal Role Auditions: August 8th!
Due to enhanced COVID-19, precautions, we are modifying our audition procedure this season!
Dancers should fill out the Nutcracker Audition Form via the link below. This will signify he or she intends to audition.
Each dancer will then be notified of an audition time approximately one week prior to August 8th.
Auditions will begin at 10 am and run most of the day.
If a dancer does not fill out the form, they will not be given an audition time.
This new procedure will allow for smaller groups of dancers at a time!
All audition forms are due no later than July 29th!
Who can audition?
Dancers in Pre-Pointe (6th grade & up) and Pointe 1-4 are eligible to audition for Principal Roles in the Nutcracker. Ballet students 6th grade & older and boys 3rd-9th grade may audition for character feature roles such as Mother Ginger (for girls) and Fritz (for boys), and others. *
*Please note: As with all auditions, there will be some dancers who are not cast in principal roles in the production as there are only a limited number of roles to be cast. It is important to understand this before auditioning and for parents to help prepare their children for this possibility.
Principal Roles to be cast at the audition include:
Sugar Plum Fairy, Clara, lead and ensemble divertissement (Chinese, Spanish, Marzipan), and many others. Principal understudies will also be cast at the audition.
It is important for all students to understand the level of commitment required for Principal roles:
Dancers cast in a role en pointe will be required to attend a Nutcracker Choreography Workshop August 21-23. In addition, any dancer cast in a principal role will rehearse on Saturday or Sunday afternoons and often other rehearsal times during the week as the performance date nears.
Principal roles do not incur additional fees and therefore provide immense value to the dancer in performance experience and additional instruction time.
Dancers in principal roles will be allowed two absences If a dancer misses more than two rehearsals, she/he may be removed from the role.
While it is our goal to provide additional performing opportunities to all dancers interested in taking on additional roles, it is important to note that not all students that audition will be cast in a principal role.
